Everyone gets stressed, and most stress passes once the thing causing it is over. Stress management counseling is worth looking at when the stress does not let up, when it starts showing up in your sleep, your body or your relationships, or when the usual fixes have stopped working. Here is how to tell the difference, what the research says about counseling for stress, and how it works in Sarasota.

Stress or anxiety: what is the difference?

The National Institute of Mental Health describes stress as the physical or mental response to an outside cause, like a heavy workload or an illness. It can be a one time event or something that keeps happening over a long stretch. Stress generally goes away once the situation is resolved, and it is not always bad. It can push you to meet a deadline just as easily as it can cost you sleep 1.

Anxiety is the body’s reaction to stress, and it can show up even when there is no current threat. It usually involves a persistent feeling of apprehension or dread that does not go away and gets in the way of daily life 1.

The two can feel the same from the inside. Both can bring excessive worry, uneasiness, tension, headaches or body pain, high blood pressure and lost sleep 1.

Signs your stress needs more than a day off

NIMH points to three signs worth taking seriously. The symptoms interfere with your everyday life, they cause you to avoid doing things, or they seem to be always present 1.

Stress also shows up in the body. Anxiety that does not go away and starts to interfere with your life could affect your health, including sleep and the immune, digestive and cardiovascular systems 1. If you are struggling to cope, or the symptoms will not go away, that is the point where NIMH suggests talking to a professional 1.

What to try on your own first

Plenty of stress responds to changes you can make yourself. NIMH suggests these, and notes that finding what works for you can take some trial and error 1:

  • Keep a journal
  • Use an app with relaxation exercises such as deep breathing, visualization or mindfulness
  • Exercise, and eat healthy, regular meals
  • Stick to a sleep routine and get enough sleep
  • Cut back on caffeine
  • Notice and challenge negative, unhelpful thoughts
  • Reach out to friends or family who help you cope in a positive way

If you have been doing most of that for a while and the stress is still running the show, that is useful information in itself.

What stress management counseling involves

At MindSol it usually starts with taking stock. You and your counselor list what is actually causing the stress, whether that is money, parenting, work or all three, and look at what is within your control and what is not. Then the work turns to the parts you can change, building routines that hold up, like a steady sleep schedule, exercise or a meditation practice, and learning what to do in the moments when stress spikes.

The research backs a structured approach. A meta-analysis of 36 experimental studies of workplace stress management programs, covering 55 interventions with an average length of 7.4 weeks, found a medium to large effect overall. Cognitive behavioral programs consistently produced larger effects than the other types studied 3.

Stress in Sarasota, by the numbers

County Health Rankings reports that adults in Sarasota County have an average of 5.5 mentally unhealthy days a month, a little under Florida’s 5.8 2. Being a little better than the state average still means close to a week of every month where things do not feel right.

That is the ordinary run of life for a lot of people here, and you do not have to wait for a crisis to talk to someone about it.
