You do not have to be married to see a couples counselor, and you do not have to be in trouble either. Plenty of the couples who call MindSol are dating seriously, living together, or planning a wedding, and they want to sort something out before it hardens into a pattern. Here is what the research says about that choice, and how it works in Sarasota.
Do you need to be married for couples counseling?
No. MindSol works with newlyweds, partners who are not married, couples together for decades, and couples who are separating. The work is the same: two people, one counselor, and whatever is actually going on between them.
What changes is the material. Unmarried couples often bring questions married couples settled years ago, like whether to move in together, how money works when only one name is on the lease, how much time each family gets, and whether the relationship is heading somewhere both people want.
Does counseling before marriage actually help?
The research here is unusually clear for this field. A meta-analysis of marriage and relationship education programs found that the amount of time couples spend matters: programs running 9 to 20 contact hours produced a relationship quality effect of 0.380 and a communication effect of 0.405, against 0.099 and 0.100 for programs of 8 hours or less 1. In plain terms, one workshop afternoon does very little, and a proper course of sessions does something measurable.
For couples therapy more broadly, a 2026 review of the evidence reports that it produces clinically significant improvement in relationship satisfaction and stability for roughly 60 to 70 percent of distressed couples 3. The same review is honest about the limits: seven therapy models have modest support, and none reached the bar for strong empirical support 3.
The finding about living together first
Couples who move in together before making a clear mutual commitment carry a higher risk of divorce later. One randomized trial put that risk at 14.6 percent filing for divorce, against 7.5 percent for couples who had not cohabited that way 2.
The interesting half is what happened to the couples who took part in a relationship education program. Their divorce rates were 7.8 percent and 7.4 percent, effectively the same 2. The risk that came with sliding into living together, rather than deciding to, did not show up.
That is one study, and it does not promise anything about your relationship. It does suggest the conversation is worth having deliberately rather than by default.
What you work on in sessions
Most of it is communication, which is also where the research finds the strongest effects 1. In practice that means learning what happens in the ninety seconds after one of you says the wrong thing, and finding a different exit from it.
Beyond that, couples bring the specifics: money and who decides, family and holidays, sex and affection, children or no children, and what each person assumed the other had already agreed to. A counselor is not there to rule on who is right. The job is to make the disagreement discussable.

You can read more about couples counseling in Sarasota, including what the first session looks like, before you get in touch. If one of you wants to work on something individually first, individual counseling is an option too, and plenty of couples start that way.
The first step is a short call with a care coordinator, who will ask what is going on and match you with a counselor who works with couples.
Frequently asked questions
Can we come in if we are just dating?
Yes. There is no minimum length of relationship and no requirement to be engaged or married. If you are asking whether it is too early, that question is itself a reasonable thing to bring to a first session.
What if only one of us wants to go?
That happens often. One partner can start on their own, and many do. Some couples come together later once the reluctant partner has seen that nobody is being put on trial.
Is this the same as premarital counseling?
The overlap is large. Premarital work tends to be structured around specific topics a couple will face, while couples counseling follows whatever the two of you bring. Say on the first call which one you are looking for and the coordinator will point you the right way.
How many sessions does it take?
Your counselor will give you a straight answer after meeting you both. The research above found that courses in the range of 9 to 20 contact hours produced clearly stronger results than a single short workshop 1, so think in terms of a stretch of sessions rather than one visit.
