Starting therapy is a powerful step toward healing and personal growth, but it’s also normal to feel nervous or unsure before your first session. At MindSol Wellness Center, we want to make that first step as comfortable and welcoming as possible. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after time away, here’s what to expect—and how to prepare.
What to Expect in Your First Session
1. A Warm Welcome
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted either in person or virtually depending on your chosen format (in-office or telehealth). You might fill out some brief intake forms if you haven’t already. These forms include basic information, consent for treatment, and sometimes questions about your goals or mental health history.
2. An Introduction to the Process
Your therapist will take time to introduce themselves and explain how therapy works. This includes your rights as a client, confidentiality (and its limits), and what the therapeutic process may look like moving forward. If you’re feeling unsure or skeptical, that’s okay—part of the first session is about building trust.
3. Time to Share Your Story
You’ll be invited to talk about what brought you in. Some people come with a clear issue they want to work on—like anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, or past trauma. Others just know they feel stuck or overwhelmed. There’s no “right” way to begin. You can go at your own pace.
4. Goal Setting and Next Steps
Before the session ends, you and your therapist may begin identifying goals for therapy. This could be as specific as “reduce panic attacks” or as broad as “gain insight into my patterns.” You’ll also talk about how often you’ll meet and schedule your next appointment.
How to Prepare for Your First Session
1. Reflect on What You Want
You don’t need a perfect summary of your life, but take a few minutes to think about what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. Ask yourself:
-
What’s been bothering me lately?
-
What do I hope will be different after therapy?
-
Have I had therapy before? What worked or didn’t work?
Jotting a few notes in your phone or journal can help you feel more prepared when it’s time to talk.
2. Be Open—But Take Your Time
You’re not expected to tell your whole story in one session. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know where to start” or “I’m nervous.” Therapists are trained to guide the process with compassion, even if it takes time for you to feel safe.
3. Manage Expectations
Therapy is not a quick fix. It’s a process, and the first session is just the beginning. You might not feel better immediately, but showing up is a meaningful step. Trust that healing can happen over time.
4. Logistical Prep
-
If it’s in-person: Arrive 10–15 minutes early and bring any necessary paperwork or ID.
-
If it’s virtual: Test your tech, find a quiet, private space, and log in a few minutes early.
Why Starting Therapy is a Strength
Seeking therapy doesn’t mean you’re broken—it means you’re brave. You’re taking your mental and emotional health seriously, and you’re willing to do the work. That’s something to be proud of.
